Painting & Decorating Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)

Frequently Asked Questions.

1. Which brand of paint is best to use?

In my personal opinion Dulux makes the best paint especially their weathershield range for outside work. Dulux paint is thick and covers exceptionally well. Lesser brands can be thinner and may require more coats of paint.

2. Which type of emulsion do I use?

Well it depends on where it is to be used and what the customer prefers. Here is an indication of which one to buy.

Matt finish

Creates a soft warm finish ideal for living and dining rooms, bedrooms and family rooms . Not recommended for bathrooms. Good for hiding any imperfections on ceilings/walls.

Soft sheen

Pretty much any room including bathrooms as it is more water resistant than the matt and is wipeable. But it also gives a less warmer feel.

Silk finish

Gives a hard wearing finish so a bathroom, kitchen, utility or porch is ideal as it can be wiped down with a cloth to remove marks. Can look colder than the other finishes and will show any imperfections on the existing walls much more so than the Matt.

3. How do decide what colours to use in a room?

Really depends on personal taste but do also keep in mind what sort of atmosphere you wish to create, for example a bedroom could be a relaxing easy on the eye colour to enhance sleep so blues and purples can be used. If you want to create an inviting atmosphere to entertain guests then a warm colour like shades of orange work well. Try to avoid dark colours in small rooms and ceilings as it will feel more enclosed. Light colours will visually make a room look bigger.

Keep an eye out for the sort of colours you would like and look at fabrics (curtains, tablecloths, etc) to see which other colours they have used. This will give you an indication to the colours that would go well. Also pick up as many colour cards as you can for ideas but remember they only show a small proportion of there range.
