Using Colour

Painting and decorating tips when using colour

This is a colour wheel I have found that shows which colours go well together.

Primary Colours: Red, yellow and blue

Secondary colours: Orange, green and purple are made by combining two primary colours. All the other colours are made by adding a combination of black, white and primary colours.

complementary colours: These colours are found directly opposite each other. These enhance each other in decorating schemes.

Related colours: These are found next door to each other. Most designers often build colour schemes around two or three related colours.

Natural colours: These are hints of the colours on the wheel. These give a light feel to a room which is not overpowering and lets the furnishings, pictures and accessories take centre stage.

If you are still not sure which colours to choose or which colours will go together then my best tip is: Go down to your local D.I.Y shop and look at there wallpaper borders. The manufactures have completed the hard work by bringing colour together,  you can take a sample away with you (these are free in most places providing you don't take too much) and match up the colour you are looking for.
